2024: 100 thousand praises

I was invited as an artist to participate in a world-wide art project conceived as “A Hundred Thousand Praises” where hundreds of artists were invited to share something about what “Praise” means to each of us. For me, the idea of praise is my way of honoring what I appreciate about someone or something, how much they inspire me, and my gratitude for their existence. Simultaneous to me receiving the invite to participate, I had just returned from time spent in New Orleans. Throughout that trip, I documented the daily delights of everything I encountered and came back to Seattle wondering why it is that many people share lovely photos and posts about their travels but that we rarely document the daily delights we might encounter in the very places we live. These two opportunities became one in my mind – I wanted to share at least one photo a day praising something that inspired me in my home city that day and this would then serve to be my offering for the “A Hundred Thousand Praises” project. I chose to share them via Facebook because that is how people world-wide share their vacation “praises” these days and as a public way of holding me accountable to seeking something to praise each day. For me, this project also falls squarely into the practice of gratitude that I have been doing for decades and it’s this practice of training our minds to look for something to be grateful for each day that does have the power to change the way we look at the world. We will still experience pain and challenges, agony and defeats. But we will also use all of life’s experiences to discover the depths of our being, to better appreciate how all of life’s moments contribute to our growth, and to offer us context to savor the joys and highlights, the ecstasy and magic that also exists. All of life then becomes praiseworthy for how it all works together to shape the human beings we are.
